Unacceptable! Duval County Schools failing our children

Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) recently received disappointing results in the state testing for the 2022-2023 school year. The data released by the Florida Department of Education indicates a significant gap between the performance of DCPS students and the state average in core subjects. Particularly concerning is the alarming lack of proficiency in English and math, with fewer than 50% of students in third through 10th grades performing at or above grade level in English and language arts.

The poor performance in English and math proficiency has significant implications for Duval County Schools. Proficiency in these core subjects is crucial not only for academic success but also for future career opportunities. Students who lack strong foundations in English language arts may struggle with reading comprehension, written communication, and critical thinking skills. Likewise, limited math proficiency can hinder problem-solving abilities and mathematical reasoning, limiting opportunities in STEM-related fields.

In response to the disappointing results, Dr. Dana Kriznar, the Superintendent of Schools, acknowledged the need for immediate action. While DCPS students outperformed the state average in algebra, geometry, and biology, the overall results in English and math fell below expectations.

Dr. Kriznar emphasized the importance of reassessing instructional strategies and curriculum to initiate positive change. With a commitment to academic improvement, she assured students and the community that the district would prioritize addressing the shortcomings highlighted by the test results.

We hope she makes good on her promise.

It is time to get back to what our children need to learn and make it in the world. Let this be a wake up call to lay off the social political teachings that administrators have been pushing and get back to reading, writing and math.

Give our kids a chance to live up to their full potential!
