As Democrats in the media have informed Jacksonville residents approximately 1,456,732 times, the election of Democrat Donna Deegan was “historic.”

To fulfill her destiny, Democrat Deegan is planning to do something historic: she will be the first female mayor of Jacksonville to tear down a statue honoring womanhood.

How historic can you get?

The Women of the Southland statue at Springfield Park has stood since 1915, a year after some 80,000 Civil War veterans held a reunion in Jacksonville.

It depicts a widow holding in her arms her two children. It proclaims, “Let this mute but eloquent structure speak to generations to come of a generation of the past. Let it repeat perpetually the imperishable story of our women of the ’60s, those noble women who sacrificed their all upon their country’s altar.”

The period alluded to was the 1860s, not the 1960s. During that time Americans went to war with each other, Republicans to free slaves and Democrats to keep them enslaved.

After the war, Republicans tried to reconstruct the country and Democrats fought to keep people with black skin subjugated through Jim Crow laws and segregation.

Estimates of the dead from the war are used because there are no reliable records, and one estimate is that 258,000 soldiers in the Confederate Army died, leaving an unknown number of widows and fatherless children.

The fact that their cause was unjust does not lessen the pain their survivors felt. It was equal to those of the relatives of the Union Army soldiers who perished.

All of it was history.

Blake Harper, head of the Unity Project, hopes to preserve accurate history and even increase historical knowledge by shedding more light on events and people that have been overlooked.

Therefore, he is leading the fight to prevent statues and monuments from being torn down, as Democrat Deegan proposes.

In one of his Facebook posts, Harper wrote: “A great price was paid to fix the wrongs of the Democrat Party and now they want to rewrite history to forget all about it.”

Deegan has included $500,000 in her $3.9 billion budget to remove the statue, continuing the course her predecessor, Lenny Curry, was on.

Ironically, the party of slavery and segregation now is trying to revise American history with the false and repulsive claim that America always has been a racist nation and is to this day.

They have pushed higher education and corporations to build in “diversity, inclusion and equity” teachings, which promulgate falsehoods and to promote Critical Race Theory.

America was founded on liberty and freedom and in a relatively short time, compared to the rest of the world, it outlawed slavery even though it resulted in perhaps a million widows and fatherless children. A century ago, children were taught those facts in school. Today there are students who not only don’t know when the Civil War was fought, but who participated.

Clearly, we need to teach more history, not less.
